Currently funded project

Advanced Design, Monitoring, Development and Validation of Novel High Performance Materials and Components (HIPERMAT)

Motivation

Value chain of the HIPERMAT use case
Technical concept for HIPERMAT

The process and plant industry is one of the most important industries in Europe. It comprises 450,000 companies with a total turnover of 1,600 billion euros and 6.8 million employees. In order to achieve the EU goals of a low-carbon or carbon-neutral economy, approaches must be pursued that consider the entire value chain. This is where the HIPERMAT project comes in: in a holistic approach, new materials and manufacturing processes are to be developed that lead to significant CO2 savings along the selected value chain.

The overall objective of HIPERMAT is to establish low-CO2 future technologies through the development of more environmentally friendly high-performance materials and components along the entire value chain. Significant CO2 savings are to be achieved through the sum of various measures: Increasing the service life of components, reducing the need for spare parts, reducing production downtimes, designing more energy-efficient thermal processes for the production of components.

The HIPERMAT approach includes the following key points:

  • Development of refractory steels and high entropy alloys supported by computer simulations
  • Novel manufacturing processes for materials with increased durability (e.g. hydrosolification) and development of protective coatings for components
  • Design, production and testing of prototypes
  • Application-oriented testing of materials and components
