Application Center Textile Fiber Ceramics

The application center Textile Fiber Ceramics (TFK) in Münchberg is a collaboration between the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and the Hof University. The application center uses the skills and equipment existing at the Hof University in the field of textile fiber processing, finishing and testing. It conveys well established textile processing techniques such as weaving, braiding, knitting or fleece production to ceramic fibers. This way, a gap in the development of ceramic fiber composite materials from the fiber to its processing and CMC is closed at Fraunhofer-Center HTL. In addition, an address for textile issues with inorganic fibers is constituted for upper franconian and supraregional companies.

Competences

The TFK is working on the development of cost-effective procedures suitable for serial production by which inorganic fibers can be processed to load-conforming 2D and 3D structures. By that, new applications are opened in lightweight design, in the aerospace industry and in the automotive industry amongst others. Reductions in weight enable resource-saving and efficiency-enhancing solutions. Furthermore the fiber structures have a high damage and temperature resistance. Test procedures for the evaluation of the fibers and semi-finished textile products are developed at the TFK as well (see Fiber Testing). Fiber characteristics and fiber surfaces can be modified on demand (see Ceramic Fibers). The semi-finished textile products can be further processed to CMC-components (see CMC-Components).

Our Services:

  • Development of textile processing procedures for inorganic fibers: ceramic, glass and carbon fibers
  • Modification of the fiber surfaces on demand (finishing, coating)
  • Subsequent processing of semi-finished textile products to CMC on demand
  • Production of semi-finished textile products by weaving, braiding, knitting or fleece production
  • Testing of fibers and semi-finished textile products

Manufacturing Processes

At Fraunhofer-Center HTL, we use modern processing techniques for inorganic fibers in our application center Textile Fiber Ceramics. We develop these further and manufacture textile semi-finished products.
