Applications Aeronautics and Aerospace

In the aerospace sector, ceramic components are used primarily because of their high rigidity, temperature resistance and low weight. Particularly lightweight constructions are possible using new textile manufacturing processes with ceramic fibres. Ceramic matrix composites (CMC) also have a particularly high reliability.

CMC for Aero Gas Turbines

The efficiency and thus the energy efficiency of aircraft gas turbines increases with the operating temperature. In this respect, ceramics with their high operating temperatures are fundamentally superior to the metal alloys that have been predominantly used to date. The lower density of ceramics also has a beneficial effect on fuel consumption.

Other Aerospace Applications

Highly rigid ceramic structures are relevant for many aerospace applications, e.g. as carriers and housings for satellite components and mini-satellites. CMCs also have excellent reliability.
